March 25

The People’s Party (PP), led by prominent activist and student leader of the 88 Generation Students Group, has re-registered on March 24 at the junta's Union Election Commission (UEC) and would campaign at the national level in the upcoming elections, the party announced in its social media page.

After enacting the new Political Parties Registration Law, Ko Ko Gyi, chairman of People's Party, claimed that he still believed in the non-violence political way.

Ko Ko Gyi also said a nationwide level political party is needed to stand strongly for the issues to resolve the country's political problems.

The People's Party, formed in 2018, competed in over 150 parliamentary and state seats, including the party's chair Ko Ko Gyi, during the 2020 General Election but none of them won.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) party that won the majority seats in the 2020 General Election, has explicitly opposed the upcoming junta-sponsored elections.

As of March 24, a total of 42 political parties have been re-registered at the junta's Union Election Commission (UEC).

Amongst those parties, 11 parties will campaign at the nationwide level and 31 parties will campaign at the state and regional levels.

According to the junta's newly amended Political Parties Registration Law, every political party needs to be re-registered within January 26 and March 28 at UEC. Those parties who failed to re-register would be automatically dissolved.

However, the National League for Democracy (NLD) party that won the 2020 General Election and Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) party, which won the third most votes during the last elections, decided not to re-register at UEC.
